Here's a list of alternative programs designed to offer help for students who are struggling in a regular high school setting. Some offer students a second chance to earn a high school diploma while others are transitional programs and do not grant diplomas. Auxiliary Services offers GED programs, with morning, afternoon and evening classes, in 6 locations throughout the city. Students also receive career counseling, and may attend vocational classes at the School of Cooperative Technical Education (Co-op Tech) while they are preparing for the GED.

Vocational courses are offered in air conditioning and refrigeration, building maintenance, carpentry, electrical installation, heating and ventilation, plumbing and welding, barbering, cosmetology, ambulance technology, automotive mechanics, child care and family services, culinary arts, digital printing, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Microsoft Office specialist, Comptiaa A+ computer maintenance and repair and Cisco Network Academy.

Admissions: Students are expected to attend a New York City high school while taking classes at Co-op Tech. Contact your school's guidance counselor for an application.

This program aims to help high school students make the transition from school to the workplace. Students may work towards a high school diploma or a GED while training in vocational programs for jobs in construction, offices, building maintenance, dental assisting, healthcare, food services, hotel and hospitality services and automotive repair in 50 locations around the city.

The Offsite Educational Services high school program aims to offer students who have struggled in their high schools a smaller and more individualized learning environment. Students can take high school courses that will help them to make the transition back into their high schools or prepare for the GED in one of 60 sites throughout the city. The programs works with community organizations to provide additional services, such as counseling, substance abuse support, and career training. LYFE day care facilities are also available for young children of students.

Young Adult Borough Centers offer evening academic programs and counseling for high school students who are at risk of dropping out because they are behind or they have adult responsibilities that make attending school in the daytime difficult. These centers are usually located at public high school buildings, including Grace Dodge, Kennedy, and Lehman high school in the Bronx, the Erasmus Campus, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson high school in Brooklyn, Washington Irving and George Washington Campus in Manhattan, Flushing and John Adams high school in Queens, and Staten Island Tech high school. Students earn a high school diploma from their sending high school once they have accumulated credits and passed exams required for graduation at the YABC.

Admissions: Students ages 17 to 21 years old who have at least 17 credits. To register, contact your high school guidance counselor or one of the program sites below:
