Learning Support Organizations

As of 2007, all schools are required to choose a School Support Organization, known as "SSO," to supply curriculum support and professional development as well as a range of other services. The SSO function is to support student learning. The Department of Education retains management and supervision, standard setting, student placement, funding, teacher recruitment, hiring and firing of principals and other mandated functions. There are three types of SSO: Empowerment, Learning, and Partnership. Principals may choose which SSO to join regardless of geographical location.

The four Learning Support Organizations, or LSOs, have specific themes and are headed by department officials who formerly were regional superintendents.

Community LSO

The Community LSO's stated goal is to create working communities within schools as well as build connections between schools and the communities where they are located. The LSO's founding CEO, Marcia Lyles, was tapped to become the deputy chancellor for teaching and learning for the central Department of Education. Her deputy, Elaine Goldberg, formerly the deputy superintendent in Brooklyn's Region 8, is now the CEO.
