After-school programs

  • Harlem Educational Activities Fund- a not-for-profit supplemental education and youth development organization that identifies scholars in middle school and supports them until they are successfully admitted to four-year colleges through a variety of after-school, Saturday and summer programs.
  • Out-of-School Time - New York City's official after school initiative features more than 550 programs that provide a mix of academic, recreational and cultural activities for young people after school, during the holidays, and in the summer.
  • Partnership for After-School Education provides technical support to schools and community agencies. The website lists locations of programs and what they offer.
  • Police Athletic League sponsors numerous after-school and summer programs. Program locations are listed by borough with contact information.
  • The After-School Corporation sponsors and funds programs in public schools. Its website shows map of districts and schools where they are located.
  • YMCA has extensive after-school program options, some of which are free.
  • Child Care Inc. – provides a referral service that helps parents locate appropriate child care and pre-kindergarten programs.

  • National PTA - the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States. A not-for-profit association of parents and educators, its mission is to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools.
  • New York Center for Interpersonal Development - provides youth, community, and professional development programs in Staten Island, and dispute resolution services that educate about constructive problem solving, effective communication, violence prevention, and intercultural awareness
  • ParentJobNet.org - offers free job networking programs, job preparation workshops, ESL classes, and other programs and resources to parents and caregivers.
  • Read to Me program - offers hands-on activities and supervised practice sessions that guide moms to read with their babies
  • Safe Horizon Mediation Program - provides on-site mediation to assist students, teachers, parents, staff, and administrators in addressing conflicts of many types in Brooklyn and Manhattan schools.
  • Science and the City - a centralized calendar of science and cultural event listings in New York City for scientists, children and families, presented by the New York Academy of Sciences.

Children with Disabilities

  • Advocates for Children of New York - AFC provides a full range of educational support, legal and advocacy services for parents, young people and professionals. It is the parent organization of Insideschools.org.
  • Association for the Help of Retarded Children - one of the first organizations to serve mentally retarded people, AHRC advocates for reform and improvement of special education services and aims for “a rich, absorbing and worthwhile day-to-day living" for its clients.
  • Council for Exceptional Children - dedicated to improving education for students with disabilities, and/or the gifted.
  • Developmental Disabilities Council - develops new ways to improve the delivery of services and supports to New Yorkers with developmental disabilities and their families.
  • Exceptional Parent Library - lists resources and websites for parents of children with special needs.
  • Family and Advocates Partnership for Education - FAPE helps parents and advocates of children with disabilities improve the education of their children. It focuses on the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Least Restrictive Environment Coalition - advocates on behalf of individual children with disabilities and their families with the New York City Board of Education, the New York State Education Department, and the United States Department of Education to enforce the LRE requirements of New York and federal law.
  • Math and Reading Help for Kids - a website with articles for parents about learning disabilities.
  • New York Institute for Special Education - provides programs for children who are blind or visually disabled, emotionally and learning disabled and preschoolers who are developmentally delayed.
  • PACER Center - the Parents Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights is a national organization that aims to improve the "quality of life of children and young adults with disabilities and their families, based on the concept of parents helping parents."
  • Resources for Children With Special Needs, Inc. - provides services to NYC parents and caregivers of children with disabilities and special needs and to the professionals who work with them.
  • SERI: Special Education Resources on the Internet – Clearinghouse of Internet accessible information of interest to those involved in the fields related to special education.
  • United Cerebral Palsy of New York City - provides direct services, technology and advocacy to children and adults of all ages with cerebral palsy and related disabilities.

  • A Better Chance is a national non-profit organization. Through its College Preparatory Schools Program, it recruits talented students of color to place them in “top” independent and public schools and offers a support system while they attend.
  • Boarding School Review offers profiles and reviews of boarding schools.
  • Breakthrough New York at The Town School is a tuition free, year-round enrichment program for highly motivated middle school students with limited educational opportunities.
  • Child Care Aware offers links to programs and services for children under five, nationwide.
  • Diocese of Brooklyn operates Roman Catholic schools in the Brooklyn and Queens; has a searchable school database.
  • Education Records Bureau administers admissions tests for private schools in New York City.
  • Gateway New York - resources about Jewish schools in Manhattan.
  • Greatschools.net - source of school information on public, private and charter schools in all 50 states, and detailed school profiles for California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, and Washington.
  • Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York – guide to private schools
  • My Boarding School provides a directory of boarding schools including college prep programs, military schools and character education schools.
  • New York Archdiocese operates Roman Catholic schools in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and upstate New York. Site has a searchable school database.
  • New York State Association of Independent Schools provides a directory of private schools in New York State with links to individual schools.
  • The Parents League offers information and advice on private school admissions in New York City to parents who pay an annual membership fee. Advice on summer camps and after-school programs also available.
  • Prep for Prep - a NYC program for academically-gifted minority students which prepares them for entrance into the city's private schools.
  • Private School Review allows you to search for private schools nationwide on their website. The site also includes information about housing, day care and other services.

  • Center for Family Life in Sunset Park - provides a range of family-centered services in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

  • The Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University- The Annenberg Institute aims to improve the conditions and outcomes of schooling in America, especially in urban communities and in schools serving disadvantaged children.
  • Campaign for Fiscal Equity - the leading organization promoting the implementation of school finance reform in the State of New York.
  • Center for Educational Reform- provides support and guidance to parents and teachers and other community stakeholders working to bring fundamental reforms to Washington D.C. schools
  • Children's Defense Fund- their mission is to Leave No Child Behind(r) and to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.
  • Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York -  advocates for the well being of children in NYC by analyzing policies, educating the public, providing opportunities for youth to get involved in their communities.
  • Class Size Matters - an organization of parents, teachers, and others, dedicated to the goal of reducing class size in New York City public schools.
  • Community Service Society - advocates for poor communities on education, housing, health and welfare. Currently CSS is concerned with school equity and finance.
  • Donors Choose- acts as a matchmaker for New York City public school teachers who submit proposals for materials or experiences that would benefit their students and donors who choose to fund these projects. Donors Choose purchases the materials for the teacher and compiles photographs, student thank-you notes, a teacher impact letter, and receipts for the donor..
  • Early Childhood Strategic Group- ECSG works to promote full implementation of universal prekindergarten as a step toward a more coordinated and well-funded system of early care and education in New York City.
  • Educational Priorities Panel- EPP’s goal is to improve the quality of public education for New York City’s children to remove the performance gap between city schools and those in the rest of the state.
  • Forum for Education and Democracy- The forum works to influence and support educational policies and practices to improve public education for all children.
