It's not too late to sign up for summer camp! Although
some camps have been fully booked since November, others, particularly day camps,
are still accepting applications, according to Carole Warsawer of www.SummerOnCampus.com.
Two phone services will tell you pretty much all you need
to know about low cost camps. Try the American Camping Association
at 800-777-CAMP and New York City’s Bureau for Day Camps
at 212-442-2630. They will give you information over the phone or send you a
packet with directories for day camps in your area. However, you will have to
do the footwork yourself and find those programs that are still taking applications.
A pricier alternative: The Parents League of New York offers
a directory of summer programs and helps parents find an appropriate camp –
but you have to join The Parents League to be eligible for their services. Membership
costs $90 a year. See www.parentsleague.org.
Colleges also offer summer programs for young people – though most are
not cheap. Summeroncampus.com offers
a pretty comprehensive listing.
Registration for children with a disability, usually
occur from January through March. If your child is still in need of placement,
you need call Resources for Children with Special Needs at
212 677-4650, as soon as possible. Tell them the child's disability and whether
you need a residential spot and they will give you the appropriate listings
for you to call. Most of these camps are on the tail end of registration. You
may also check their website www.resourcesnyc.org.
Call or e-mail now to check availability.
