Still looking for an elementary or middle school for your child? You might want to consider one of the new schools opening in September. In addition to the high schools and transfer schools opening this fall, 27 schools with elementary and middle school grades will also open their doors.
Applications to new middle schools are due April 14.
Most of the new elementary and middle schools replace existing schools that are being closed due to poor performance; for the most part, these schools will absorb the students who were previously assigned to the failing schools. In Queens and Staten Island, however, the Department of Education is opening new schools in new sites.
Unlike in previous years, only a very few of this fall's new schools replicate existing schools. In Brooklyn's District 16, Eagle Academy for Young Men II is based on the successful Eagle Academy for Young Men high school in the Bronx. Nearby District 14 will see the opening of the Young Women's Leadership School of Brooklyn, the fifth school opened by the Young Women's Leadership Foundation. Both schools are opening with 6th grades and will eventually serve students in all middle and high school grades.
And in Queens, two secondary schools are opening with both 6th and 9th grades: the Academy of Medical Technology and Queens Collegiate; both schools are affiliated with the College Board.
To find out more about these new schools, including how to apply, call their temporary phone numbers. You may need to leave a message, but a school leader should get back to you quickly.
