Our Insights

More than half the children at IS 143 are English Language Learners. Many come from the Dominican Republic, and some have had their education interrupted in their home country.

The enrollment of IS 143 decreased dramatically from 1,500 in 2006 to fewer than 250 in 2019. The decline in enrollment is caused by two factors: gentrification, which has forced many families to move to cheaper neighborhoods in the Bronx, and the growth of school choice, which has allowed parents to enroll their children in other schools in the district.

IS 143 shares a modern four-story building (and a middle school attendance zone) with the middle and high school grades of Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School, also known as WHEELS a popular school serving PK-12.

Admissions: Neighborhood school. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, Mary 2019)
