Foreign Language Academy of Global Studies (FLAGS) High School was closed at the conclusion of the 2015-2016 school year.

Located in the South Bronx, FLAGS' enrollment dropped from nearly 500 students in 2009 to fewer than 100 in its final year. It struggled with high staff turnover, student behavior and safety concerns. Fewer than half of the students graduated on time.

in its final year, FLAGS was part of the city's Renewal program, a plan to turn around struggling schools that don't meet state benchmarks. Members of the surrounding Mott Haven community protested the vote to close the school at an April 2016 Panel for Educational Policy meeting, asking instead that the city devote more resources to it."Our Renewal led to our removal," said former FLAGS teacher Aixa Rodriguez, Chalkbeat reported. However, schools chancellor Carmen Faria said that not enough students were choosing the school to enable it remain open.

Students who did not graduate in 2016 were assigned to other schools to finish high school. (Nathaniel Cain, web reports, July 2016)
