Huge football field

The Downside

Poor attendance

The Careers in Sports High School has an attractive building with a huge football field and a wide array of sports teams. Teachers say principal Johanny Garcia is an effective manager, and students say they feel safe, according to the NYC School Survey.

However, the school has very poor attendance, and nearly two-thirds of students miss more than one month of school. Attendance teachers make phone calls and home visits to students who are chronically absent, according to the school's annual Comprehensive Educational Plan. The student body is predominantly male.

Founded in 2002, the school was originally designed to weave athletics into the curriculum and to introduce students to jobs in fields such as sports medicine and sports marketing. However, a limited budget forced teachers to concentrate scarce resources on core academics. The school was founded with the support of the Urban Assembly but is no longer affiliated with that school reform group.

The school shares the nine-acre Mott Haven Educational Campus building, opened in 2010, with several other small schools.
