What’s Special

Art, dance and jazz

The Downside

Attendance and test scores have a ways to go

Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists offers dance in partnership with Alvin Ailey, Afro-Latin jazz, and art classes at Casita Maria Center for Arts Education, one of the oldest Hispanic community organizations in the city.

Bronx Studio shares a spacious building with Casita Maria, the school’s founding partner. In addition to art classes, Casita Maria offers afterschool recreation and tutoring and sponsors college trips for juniors and seniors.

Bronx Studio, founded in 2004, faces challenges. Attendance is below the citywide average, and about one-third of the children miss more than 18 days of school, which interrupts their education. A plan to improve attendance includes training parent leaders to help with parent outreach, and adding more school-wide events to welcome parents.

UNITAS, a mental health organization, provides one-on-one counseling to kids at risk of chemical substance abuse or other struggles. A UNITAS social worker and social work intern lead a group session twice a week.

Many children are behind in reading and math when they arrive and many have special needs. Instruction in the middle and high school needs to be more rigorous and consistent to get kids ready for high school and college, it says in the Quality Review report. The staff has adopted new math and science programs and hired consultants and coaches to help improve academics.

Progress is hard to see but in the school's most recent Comprehensive Educational Plan, teachers celebrated a reduction in the numbers of math students scoring Level 1 (out of 4) by 17 percent, the greatest progress in the district.

Teens who want more challenge may choose from half a dozen Advanced Placement (AP) courses such as art history and biology, and take classes at Hostos Community College. Global Kids, Inc. sponsored an eco-tour to Costa Rica. The Afro-Latin Jazz Alliance offers music classes led by professional musicians twice a week.

A full time college counselor and two interns host a senior parent night to prepare parents for the college admissions process and provide financial aid information. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and DOE data, August 2018)
