What’s Special

Small, all-female school

The Downside

Poor attendance

Women's Academy of Excellence is a small all-female high school with an emphasis on math, science and civic responsibility. All students are required to complete 200 hours of community service. The high school directory says the school offers coding and partners with the internship program at Montefiore Hospital.

The school has improved in some areas in recent years but still has a ways to go. Teachers have raised academic expectations according to a recent Quality Review. The on-time graduation rate is improving. Teachers say the tone is safe and orderly. Attendance is poor however. Almost two thirds of the students miss a month or more of school.

The school has an ethnically diverse student population. Roughly a quarter of the girls are still learning to speak English. They come from home countries that include Mexico, Central America, Pakistan, India and West Africa.

Principal Arnette Crocker has led the school since it was founded in 2005. It was modeled after the Young Women’s Leadership School in East Harlem.

The school shares a building with Archimedes and Bronx Mathematics Preparatory School. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, December 2018)
