The Downside

Working to build a more consistency school-wide

MS 232 is located in the University Heights section of the Bronx in an attractive red brick building that is almost a century old. The building is shared with two small, well-regarded schools: The Leadership & Community Service Academy (I.S. 303), and The Academy for Language and Technology, a high school for new immigrants.

MS 232 serves a range of students, from a handful of top-scorers on state exams to new immigrants whose formal education has been interrupted due to war or economic hardships. Students and their families have access to free counseling, dental screening and other health services at The Morris Heights Health Center on the second floor, which is staffed by a physician’s assistant, a nurse and a social worker.

Other supports include an after school program, a Saturday program and extra help during school breaks. There are also advanced (Regents) courses in Living Environment and Algebra I.

The tone of the school has improved, and test scores, though still very low, are moving in the right direction under the leadership of Principal Desiree Resto, who took the helm in 2016.

A report by the city called the Quality Review shows teachers need to work together to build a better sense of trust and collaboration, to be more consistent from class to class, and to present more challenging lessons to students.

Campus-wide sports include basketball, baseball and volleyball.

Admissions: IS 232 and IS 303 share a zone. Open to students and residents of Districts 9 and 10.  (Lydie Raschka, web reports, May 2019)
