What’s Special

Project-based school for new immigrants learning English

The Downside

Few arts classes

Bronx International is a small high school that serves students who have been in the country for four years or less who are learning English. Founded in 2001, it opened in partnership with International Network for Public Schools, an organization with long experience preparing new immigrants for college, including those who have had little schooling in their home country. Students primarily come from the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Ecuador and West African countries.

Academics & Instruction: Because students arrive at the school with different educational backgrounds and degrees of English fluency, classes mix age groups. Ninth- and 10th-graders study together with the same teachers for two years to improve their language skills. In all grades, teens work together in groups where they often collaborate on projects and translate for one another.

The school is a member of the New York Performance Standards Consortium. Most high schools require students to take five Regents exams to graduate, but Consortium schools only require the English language arts exam. In the other subjects, students present portfolios of their work to a panel of teachers, students and visitors to demonstrate what they have learned and provide evidence of progress. These may take the form of an essay or research paper, an original science experiment or the application of higher-level mathematics.

In 11th grade, students participate in internships to acquaint them with the world of work and to help them develop their English skills in a non-school setting. Students may take college classes through Howard University, Bronx Community College or Hostos Community College.

Students who struggle may work one-on-one with a paraprofessional, in small groups, and during after school tutoring. A Saturday enrichment program is open to all students.

Themes and programs: The school offers three CTE (career and technical education) programs.  Historic Preservation builds skills in carpentry, electrical wiring, masonry and plumbing. Digital Design is an introduction to the skills of a graphic designer, video game designer, and social media marketer. (These students can graduate with Adobe ACA Certification.) Urban Farming is a mix of coursework and hands-on learning at Morris Campus Farm. All students study career and financial management. The school offers visual art.

Culture & Environment: Each student is assigned a mentor who checks in on their academic progress toward graduation. A team of six teachers work with roughly 100 students who travel from class to class together to build support and community. Students take part in Restorative Justice circles, where they talk through conflicts and build strategies for healthy relationships.

Building & Facilities: The school is housed on the third floor of the Morris Educational Campus. Built in 1897, the building boasts high ceilings, stained-glass windows, two gymnasiums, a dance studio and a beautiful auditorium with a pipe organ.

Four small high schools share the building. Sports teams are campus-wide and the schools share the free Montefiore Health Clinic, complete with exam rooms, a dental suite and a counseling area.

College & Career: Volunteers from the NYU College Advising Corps, along with teachers and staff who speak French, Spanish, Arabic and various Western African languages work in the computer lab to go over necessary documentation to complete financial aid applications. Several workshops for families are geared towards college and financial aid. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and interview, August 2023)
