What’s Special

Spacious building and lots of sports

The Downside

Poor attendance

Bronx Leadership Academy II has a spacious building with a football field and lots of sports teams. Teachers trust one another and work well together, according to the NYC School Survey, and parents say the staff is always available by e-mail, text and phone, according to the school's Quality Review.

Although most students enter BLA II reading well below grade level, the majority graduate on time. Students get lots of extra attention from Blue Engine Teaching Apprentices, or BETAs, recent college graduates who work with teachers in English and math classes. The school’s yearly Comprehensive Educational Plan says assistants, who reduce the ratio of adults to students to 7 to 1, have helped increase the number of students who pass Regents exams in English and algebra.

Students give the college office high marks, with 90 percent saying the school gives good advice on how to apply to and pay for college, according to the School Survey.

However, attendance is a challenge, and nearly half the students miss more than a month of school.

The school was founded in 2002 in the old Morris High School building and moved in 2010 to the Mott Haven Educational Campus, which it shares with other schools. It is an offshoot of the original Bronx Leadership Academy, founded in 1993 with the support of South Bronx Churches.
