What’s Special

Dance instruction in ballet and modern dance

The Downside

Some concerns about discipline

Located near the last stop on the No. 4 subway, Bronx Dance Academy has long offered students the chance to study classical ballet and modern dance with professional dancers. It also offers a program in visual arts, which includes history, drawing, painting and fashion design.

Dancers may study with Alvin Ailey, American Ballet Theater and Martha Graham School of Contemporary dance. The art program is led by a certified art teacher, according to the Annual Arts in the Schools report. The school is 75 percent female.

While test scores are only average, the school does better than average compared to schools with similar students, according to Department of Education statistics. A downside: While most students feel safe, both teachers and students say discipline could be improved, according to school surveys.

Admissions: Open to students from the Bronx. An audition is required for both the dance program and the visual arts program. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, April 2019)
