What’s Special

Arts partnership with the 92nd Street Y

The Downside

Struggles to raise test scores

P.S. 41 Gun Hill Road is a large neighborhood elementary school on a residential street in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx. Its motto is “believe and achieve,” and feedback on the Annual School Survey indicate that teachers do have high expectations for their students and provide an orderly, supportive environment. They emphasize emotional awareness and self-reflection, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan, and regularly teach students exercises and activities to enhance their moods.

Test scores lag behind other District 11 schools, however, as the school struggles to serve a high share of students in economic need. They partner with the 92nd Street Y for music and dance classes, and offer afterschool programs with dance, music, drama, technical and visual arts programming. Students perform in an annual talent show and display their artwork throughout the building, according to the school’s Annual Arts Report.

ADMISSIONS: Zoned neighborhood school. (Nicole Mader, web reports, April 2020)
