What’s Special

Strong academic and non-academic offerings after school

The Downside

Trust amongst adults is below city average

Located in the Wakefield section of the Bronx, P.S. 68 is a neighborhood elementary school with pre-kindergarten, an instrumental program with a string orchestra and a small NEST program for children with autism.

The school gets an “excellent” rating on student achievement from the city, although some parents and teachers believe teaching is not rigorous enough, NYC school surveys show.

Trust is often an important indicator at schools, which the city measures annually. Teachers at this school reported trusting both the principal and each other less than other schools in the city. And some teachers say that order and discipline is not maintained, school surveys show. We did not observe in the school’s yearly plan a way to address mistrust.

Finally, the school participates in academic programs like Algebra for All and Universal Literacy, a program in which reading coaches work with teachers to help bring students up to grade level by the end of 2nd grade. Beyond academics, the school has after school programs in partnership with COMPASS, homework clinics for parents and students, and support sessions for English Language Learners.
