What’s Special

Four years of math and science; community work in health and science positions

The Downside

Metal detectors

Tucked into a wing of the behemoth Truman High School in Co-op City, Bronx Health Sciences is a tiny, safe, well-run high school that offers four years of math and science and requires many hours of community service in the fields of health and science. The school does a good job of preparing students for college, even though many arrive in 9th grade unprepared to do high school-level work.

Children are required to do 420 hours of community service during their four years. They choose from a community handbook, and may apply to nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, hospitals or associations to benefit children or the homeless. Some volunteer at the Bronx Zoo and get firsthand experience with animal behavior, anatomy and physiology, according to the Quality Review. Others volunteer at Montefiore Hospital, The American Cancer Society and Beth Abraham Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, among other locations.

In school, children are assessed not only with traditional testing but also through projects they complete both individually and in groups.

Miriam Rivas has been principal since the school opened in 2004. Most teachers say she is an effective manager and most would recommend the school to other families.

College preparation begins in 9th grade and includes mentoring of students having difficulties. Students in grades 11 and 12 have a college advisor who helps them work through the college admissions process.

Students are required to wear uniforms. All students must pass through metal detectors. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and DOE data, September 2018)
