Our Insights

Canarsie Educational Campus houses three schools, the High School for Medical Professions, the Urban Action Academy and the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media. All three small schools opened in 2008 to replace the old Canarsie High School which graduated its last class in 2011 after years of poor performance.

Students at the High School for Medical Professions receive in-class emergency-room and EMT training and do two hours of community service each week at nearby hospitals and nursing homes. The school, which opened in 2008, attracts the strongest students in the building and has an impressive attendance rate. Students must wear a uniformand those who dont must serve detention.

The Urban Action Academy focuses on law and public service. Students participate in moot court and mock trial at Fordham University.

The High School of Innovation in Advertising and Media was founded with the hope of encouraging blacks and Hispanics to consider careers in a field that traditionally has been dominated by whites. Ad agencies offer students mentorships and internships. (Clara Hemphill, November 2012)
