Our Insights

What’s Special

Strong academics and effective principal.

The Downside

Technology program is lacking.

PS 185 has high academic standards, a well-regarded principal and teachers who don’t want to teach anywhere else.

Both parents and teachers give high marks to Principal Kenneth Llinas on the Learning Environment Survey. Parents are very satisfied with the quality of their children’s education and all the teachers agree the principal is an effective manager.

The school has a variety music programs including recorder for 3rd graders, music history and a school chorus for 4th and 5th graders. The students also have art class, gym class, technology class, and drawing class. In drawing class, they use sketching to learn more about different core subject areas. “For a social studies lesson, they may practice map making, or if they were doing a science lesson they would learn how to diagram a frog,” said PTA Co-President Jennifer Kruger said in a phone interview.

“The parents are very involved. We have a strong PTA that funds all the enrichment programs the school can’t pay for,” Kruger said. “We have a terrific assembly program. Last year we flew in ballet dancers from Chicago who did a fantastic Greek mythology ballet.”

The school also has ballroom dancing for 5th graders, student government in the upper grades, and a native plant garden. Students also participate in a chess program where students receive chess instruction ever other week, funded by the PTA.

Before becoming principal, Llinas was assistant principal at PS 185. Llinas graduated from Pace University and received a master's in early childhood education from the Bank Street College of Education.

Special education: Integrated co-teaching classes.

Admissions: Zoned neighborhood school. (Annaclaire Diianni-Miller, web reports, July 2013).
