Our Insights

What’s Special

Teachers treat students with respect

The Downside

Poor attendance

Modeled after the original Mott Hall, a school for gifted children in Harlem, Mott Hall IV opened on the top floor of IS 271 in Ocean Hill in September 2004.

The school has had its ups and downs. Although it has “screened” admission policy, Mott Hall IV hasn’t been able to attract many strong applicants in recent years. Most students enter with weak academic skills.

The school had four principals in five years. Attendance is poor and parent involvement is low, according to the school’s annual plan.

On the positive side, students say their teachers treat them with respect; students they say they can confide in adults in the school, according to school surveys.

This school shares a building with Eagle Academy for Young Men II and Ocean Hill Collegiate Uncommon Charter.

Admissions: Open to Brooklyn students. The school looks at students test scores, grades, and attendance. (Clara Hemphill, web reports. April 2019)
