What’s Special

Small, safe alternative to the large local high school; focus on law and police careers

The Downside

School not yet known to college admissions officers

EBC/East New York High School for Public Safety & Law is closed, having graduated its last class in 2011. Founded in 1996 in association with the nonprofit community organization East Brooklyn Congregations to provide a small school option in a neighborhood where there were few such schools, EBC/ENY in its last years struggled with poor student performance and safety and discipline problems.

More than 80 percent of the teachers said that safety and discipline were a problem, according to the 2009-2010 Learning Environment Survey. Teachers also expressed dissatisfaction with school leadership.

Average attendance, at 71 percent, was way below the norm for high schools. Many students arrived at the school with significant academic shortcomings and only a small percentage managed to graduate with a Regents diploma.

The converted industrial building is now occupied by Aspirations Diploma Plus High School, an alternative school and, as of September 2012, ROADS 1 Charter High School for older students who have accumulated very few, if any, high school credits. (Pamela Wheaton, March 2012)
